Black Sand. This song was composed during a walk on the beach. It is a song of joy, not just in being on the beach on a beautiful day, but also in discovering inner strength, and a way forward. We ended up keeping both flute solos - thank you Robbie Duncan for that moment of brilliance!
When the West Wind Blows. This song was finished in the studio - a first. It is about loss, about strength, about wild westerlies, about roiling sand on the harbour floor, and it took me ten years to complete it. I love the use of Michael’s voice in unison with mine.
Orange and Indigo. Living where we do in Raglan, many evenings we are treated to spectacular sunsets. This song has many layers, like the orange fading to apricot in the sky, or the indigo fading to grey on the sea. I sometimes think of it as a painting, a pastiche of nature and my soul.
Ohura Tui. While this is performed in the key of G, the tui actually sang the first five notes in E flat. After some call-and-answer exchanges with the tui, sitting under Angela’s apple tree, the tune emerged.
Jack’s Waltz. For my father, Jack.
Moth on a Window. One of the few songs I wrote during the 1990s that has stayed with me. Inspired by life events and a pūriri moth.
Restless. It seemed fitting to end the collection with another beach-walking song.
